Reproductive wastage in some urban abattoirs in Ogun State, Nigeria
Abstract
Reproductive wastage in two urban abattoirs, Ijebu-Igbo and Lafenwa, both in Ogun State, were investigated. More cows than bulls were slaughtered in both abattoirs. Foetal wastage increased steadily from 6.39% in 1994 to 10.27% in 1997, decreasing steadily to 7.39% in 2000. Season of slaughter had no significant (P>0.05) effect on foetal loss. However, there were significantly (P<0.05) more foetal losses in Lafenwa abattoir than Ijebu-Igbo and these
foetuses were largely in their third (6-9 months) trimester.
