Abstract

An investigation into the incidence of abnormalities of the external genitalia in male ruminants was carried out in three livestock markets in Akure metropolis. A total of 1,090 bulls, 1,002 rams and 1,028 bucks from
these markets were examined for the frequency of abnormalities of the external genitalia. Abnormalities observed included cryptorchidism, testicular hypoplasia, orchitis, paraphimosis and genital wounds. The results showed that 7.14% White Fulani Bulls, 16.32% Sokoto Gudali Bulls, 10.25% Red Bororo Bulls, 4.28% Yankasa rams and 36.40% West African Dwarf Bucks had various forms of external genitalia abnormalities. The possible causes of these conditions, the implication on the reproductive capabilities of
these animals and some measures to prevent them were discussed.
