Response of guava cuttings to different growth media
Abstract
Guava is open-pollinated and therefore may not produce true-to-type in many areas. This study was conducted to evaluate the response of guava cuttings to different growing media. The effect of growth media on the growth and development of guava cuttings was observed for 10 weeks. The results obtained showed a significant difference among the growth media. Clay soil produced the highest number of buds per plant (1.75), and rate of survival (41%) while subsoil produced the highest number of leaves per bud (9.40). Sawdust and river sand had the least value in terms of number of leaves per bud and survival rate. The study concluded that clay soil was the most promising media for the regeneration of cuttings and therefore recommended that it would be worthwhile to produce guava propagules through stem cuttings.
