Poultry manure management pattern in Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State
Abstract
Livestock manure constitutes a potential source of environmental pollution with far-reaching implications on health. Farm management challenge is on the increase due to the growing livestock industry in all the states of Nigeria. This necessitated a survey of livestock manure management in Ikorodu local government area of Lagos state to ascertain the pattern and its effect on livestock production and public health significance. Data obtained with a structured questionnaire and interview was analysed using percentage distribution and bar chat. The methods of livestock manure removal from the farms were dumping, recycling or burning. Most (40%) of the respondents dumped their livestock manure along road paths and nearby bushes. 10% of the farmers engaged in the burning of dried manure. 32.50% of the farmers mentioned the use of drugs and chemicals as feed additives and 45% stated compliance with feeding regulations as measures to reduce manure management challenges. The study concluded that a similar study should be conducted in other livestock zones of Lagos State. Livestock farmers should be educated and given orientation on the various ways of utilizing their wastes and solutions to livestock management challenges.
