Abstract

Background: This study was carried out to observe the effect of pure honey on High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) - cholesterols in albno rats.
Methodology: Twelve male Wister strain rats weighing between 147- 193 grams were divided into 4 groups of 3 rats each and for 20 days fed the following diets ad-libitum: Group 1-standard normal diet and water, group 2-standard normal diet and 20% honey solution, group 3-high lipid diet and water, group 4-high lipid diet and 20% honey solution. The rats were sacrificed on the 21st day after a 15 hour fast Their sera were analyzed for lipid profiles .
Results: The Body weight changes were noted in all groups and group 3 had the highest increase body weight of 20.7±1.9%, group 4 had 15.5± 1.7%, group 2 had 14.0± 2.0 and group 1 had 5.6 ± 2.0. The lipid profiles
of their sera showed a significant (P<0.05) increase in HDL-cholesterol and a decrease in LDLcholesterol in groups 2 and 4 compared to groups 1and 3 respectively.
Conclusion: This result showed that in-take of pure honey significantly increases in blood level of HDL- cholesterol and decreases LDL- cholesterol level in experimental rats, therefore pure honey may be worthwhile apply to humans.
