The Scope Of Ear, Nose And Throat Surgeries In The Theatre In University Of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt

Abstract



This study sought to evaluate the scope of surgeries performed in the Ear, Nose and Throat theatre and to highlight its importance to training and patient care. It was a retrospective study done between mid April 2004 and August 2006. All patients operated in this period in the ENT theatre were evaluated and relevant information obtained from their case records. A total of 131 patients were operated in the study period of 125 weeks. The female to male ratio was 1:1.6. The age range was from six months to 90 years. Surgeries involving the throat were 89(67.9%), the nose 27(20.6%), head and neck 8(6.1%) and the ear 7(5.3%). 88(67.2%) patients had elective surgery while 43(32.8%) patients had emergency surgery. 61 patients (46.6%), were five years and below. The patient load in this study was low. Adenotonsillectomy, tracheostomy and direct laryngopscopy were the commonest operations performed. Surgery of the ear was notably low.
