Cradle songs of Avatime women (Ghana)

Abstract

The Avatime child is born into an atmosphere charged with belief in myths, legends and tradition. Cradle song performances are part of the enculturation process through which babies are introduced to music and linguistic behaviour. The songs are mostly performed by women for personal and social reasons. Traditionally, most of the songs are acquired aurally from older relatives. Analyses of selected song texts reveal the joy of childbearing, admiration for babies, female concerns and social commentary, making cradle songs transcend trivialities, and promote musical values and customs.
