The effects of desmopresin on intracular pressure
Abstract
The effects of desmopressin on intraocular pressure on normotensive volunteers (age 21-70yrs) of both sexes were studied. Prior to intransal instillation of 10mg desmopressin, baseline values of intraocular pressure were assessed so that each subject served as his or her own control. Plasma osmolality, antidiuretic hormone (ADH) concerntrations and systemic blood pressure (BP) were also determined to establish their initial values. Result showed a significant reduction (p<0.01) in intraocular pressure (IOP) and increase in ADH concentration (p<0.05) while diastolic/ systolic pressures and plasma osmolality produced non-statistical significant changes. It is noted that ADH reduces IOP without affecting plasma osmolality. ADH agonists may therefore be useful in the treatment of ocular hypertension.
