Estimation of stature from arm span of male Igbo students of Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki in South Eastern Nigeria
Abstract
This study was carried out to predict the stature of Igbo male subjects from arm span. The height and arm span of 400 Igbo male students of Ebonyi State University whose age range varies from 15-40 years were measured and documented. The subjects were free from physical deformities that can affect stature or arm span. The result showed that arm span correlated positively (r=0.95) with the individual height. Also, the arm span exceeded height in all the age groups, studied. In general, the mean arm span of the whole subjects is 174.3 ± 6.5(cm) while the mean standing height is 168.3±8.3 (cm) with the mean difference of 6.0±4.6 (cm). Regression analysis indicates that stature could be predicted from arm span. This could be of applicability in forensic and clinical studies.
