Abstract

There were no doubt regarding the superior contribution of SMES, which amounted to more than 70% of goods and services that are sold all over the world. There are still constraints in the development of SMEs that deteriorate the business performance and eventually could result in failures and bankruptcies. This study intended to investigate the constraints and their impacts to the performance of SMEs in the food manufacturing industry in Malaysia. This study has been able to conduct using quantitative method to 135 SMEs in food manufacturing and analyze using SPSS. It is found out that financial and external constraints are positively significant to the performance of SMEs in food manufacturing compared to institutional, internal and social constraints. In addition, this study provides a wide range of implications in the different context of use and acceptance in food manufacturing.
