Abstract

This study investigated the perception of pre-service and in-service teachers on the relevance of Social Studies to values and moral inculcation among students in Ogun State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was used. A sample of 90 pre-service teachers from Federal Colleges of Education, Abeokuta and 36 in-service teachers from 18 junior secondary schools in Odeda local government area of Ogun State was employed. A self-designed structured questionnaire was administered to the respondents. The results revealed that pre-service and in-service teachers had positive perception of the relevance of Social Studies to values and moral inculcation. The findings equally showed that pre-service and in-service teachers' perception of the relevance the subject to values and moral inculcation is neither a factor of gender nor grade of teaching experience. Consequently, it was recommended that pre-service and in-service teachers should further help students to develop and nurture moral values as embedded in Social Studies.
