Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate differences in distance learners' academic performance based on some demographic  variables such as gender, disability status, employment status, and marital status. A selfdesigned instrument was used for data collection from a sample of 1300 participants, selected through stratified random sampling technique. The study adopted the ex-post facto research design. Four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 5% significant level with the aid of t-test statistical tool to guide the study. Findings show that there was significant difference in the distance learners' academic performance based on disability status (t(1298) = 2.394, p< .05, d= .31) and marital status (t(1298= 2.317, p< .05, d =.31) respectively. Based on the findings, it was recommended inter alia more attention should be given to these demographic factors by the students, particularly those that cause difference in academic performance.
