Assessment of the effectiveness of guidance services in senior secondary schools in Jos north local government area, Plateau state
Abstract
The study sought to assess the effectiveness of guidance services in senior secondary schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The study used cross-sectional survey design and a sample of 223 respondents comprising of teachers, students and counsellors. Two different closed format questionnaires were used. Guidance Service Assessment Questionnaire for Teacher/Students (GSAQTS) was used to measure the extent of guidance services and their perception of it. Guidance Service Assessment Questionnaire for Counsellors (GSAQC) was used to measure the extent of the available materials for guidance services and the influences of ratio of students to counsellor. It was found that guidance services are not properly placed or recognized, facilities needed for quality guidance services are inadequate, there is a high ratio of students to counsellor, and a misconception of the counsellors role has made guidance services ineffective.
