Abstract
This paper outlines the prevalent problem of inoptimal solid waste disposal in the cities of developing countries with a focus on Nairobi, Kenya. It finds that Nairobi is in dire need of alternatives to the only dumpsite at Dandora, which is already condemned by the health authorities. It then presents a study that was conducted to identify such alternatives using the GIS approach. The study identifies nine suitable potential sites according to a defined set of criteria; at least two of these sites, at Ngong and at Ruai, have the highest potential to serve adequately as dumpsites.
