Implications Of Using External Consultants In Diagnosing And Managing Organizational Change

J J Martey

Abstract

Organizational changes emanate from several factors, including changes in the environment, products/services offered, technology, working methods, management, working relationships, and organizational structure or size. Identifying the need for change can be done through a diagnostic exercise, usually undertaken by an external consultant or specialist. The process of diagnosing need for the change, the problems/issues to be addressed and the implications of using external consultants are discussed in the paper. Some practical examples of the diagnosis by external consultants are also presented. While the use of external consultant in diagnosing the need for change is vital and beneficial, much more can be gained if certain problems/issues can be addressed. Gaining co-operation from the client organization and the avoidance of application of standardized solutions are important issues that need attention. The external consultant needs to
present value for money and avoid being embroiled in the internal politicking of the organization, but present objective situational report on the organization.
