Abstract

This study investigated other known factors associated with ruptured ectopic pregnancy. Retrospective analysis of the medical records of women who were operated on for ruptured ectopic pregnancy at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi from 1991 to 2003 was carried out. No patient was excluded and all the information needed were available in the records. There were 530 cesarean sections, 155 laparotomies, 5 spontaneous abortions and11072 vaginal deliveries. Of the laparotomies, 22 (14.2%) were done for ruptured ectopic pregnancy in women aged 18 – 40 years. Out of the 22, 10 (45.5%) had previous abdominal surgery; 3 (13.6%) were exposed to sexually transmitted disease; 5 (55.7%) had some form of contraception; 5 (22.7%) had evidence of pelvic inflammatory disease, 15 (68.2%) had previous viable pregnancy and 7 (32.8%) never been pregnant previously. A collaborative multi-center prospective study is needed to establish associations on a wider scale. This will include a study of all forms of ectopic pregnancy established by all methods of diagnosis
