Abstract

This paper discusses academic libraries in the digital age, universal access to electronic resources and emerging issues for academic libraries in Nigeria. It reviews and presents conceptual model of print and electronic resources. The model consists of two access environments: the in-house, local, or independent environment and the universal, global, or integrated access environment. The model is analyzed including explanation of three (A, B & C) alternative units for the in-house environment. The paper concludes with the challenge that Nigerians and indeed other developing countries should embrace the scenario where access to electronic resources should replace the traditional practice of walking to the library to consult the card catalogue and browse the shelves.
