Publisher
Journal of Applied Sciences and Environmental Management (JASEM) is an international journal established by the Joint Coordination Centre of the World Bank assisted National Agricultural Research Programme (NARP) domicile in the Faculty of Science, University of Port Harcourt and currently journal published in the Department of Pure & Industrial Chemistry, University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Nigeria
Sources of Support
Supported by the Ayebaemi Ibuteme Spiff Chair in Environmental Chemistry, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria and Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS), University of Port Harcourt, Choba, Nigeria
Peer Review Process
The Journal of Applied Sciences & Environmental Management (JASEM) operates a single-blind peer-review structure where the reviewers know the names of the authors, but the authors do not know who reviewed their manuscript unless the reviewer chooses to sign their report. All submitted manuscripts are evaluated by the Executive Editor in a pre-submission suitability checks. Manuscript beyond the scope of the journal are rejected and corresponding Author is informed. Manuscript within the Scope of the Journal is acknowledged with Paper Tracking Number by the Secretary/Editorial Assistant and forwarded to the Technical Editor for handling. The Technical Editor screens the paper for quality assessment using the Duplicate Content Plagiarism Checker and 75% Unique Content (UC) is required in the preliminary submission check for an article to proceed to reviewers. If an Article UC > 75%, the Technical Editor will peruse the pull of reviewers in the appropriate subject area of specialization. Once appropriate reviewers are identified, the article will be forwarded to the Reviewer with the Author Guidelines and every reviewer is expected to return the peer-review comments within four weeks. Some physiochemical parameters that affect transport of soil nutrients into plant tissues were analysed using standard methods. The pH of the rhizosphere soil of C. olitorius was 6.71 and the soil of A. hybridus was slightly alkaline in nature with pH 7.75. The rhizosphere of A. hybridus had the highest concentration of Pb (123.20±90.04 mg/kg) and Cd (0.63±0.63 mg/kg) while Cr was highest in the rhizosphere of C. olitorius (36.57±8.61 mg/kg). The result showed total and bioavailable metal concentrations in the soils were in the order of Pb > Cr > Cd. The order of metal uptake varied with vegetable crop. Metal concentration in tissues of A. hybridus followed the order of Pb > Cr > Cd while C. olitorius was Cr > Pb > Cd. Concentrations of Cd, Pb and Cr exceeded the maximum permissible limit in soil and within allowable limit in the tissue. C. olitorius had transfer factor (TF) < 1 for Cd, Pb and Cr. A. hybridus had similar transfer factor except for Cr with TF > 1. The study concluded that the dumpsite converted to farmland is highly contaminated with Pb, Cr, and Cd and highly accumulated by the vegetables.
