Assessment of the health status of ground water in Aluu Community of Rivers State, Nigeria
Abstract
This project entailed laboratory investigations and experimental procedures carried out to determine the various physico-chemical parameters that ascertain the quality of groundwater in Aluu Community of Obio Akpor Local Government Area (LGA) of Rivers State, Nigeria. Samples of ground water from randomly selected boreholes situated in the study area were analysed using standard procedures. The pH (5.09 to 6.99); turbidity, (±4.0) and total dissolved solids (TDS); ±20.0 were consistent in all the sites sampled. However, chlorine content showed slight variability across the sampled areas but was within acceptable standards; 4.0 ± 28.0. The negligible content of heavy metals like Zinc (Zn++), and Calcium (Ca+) ions indicated that the water could be used for domestic purposes with minimal purification.
Key Words: Variability, acceptable standards, minimal purification
