Fishing as a Means of Poverty Reduction by the Migrant Fisherfolks of Zumba and Shakodna in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study was conducted to find out the impact of fishing as means of poverty reduction on the fisher folks of Zumba and Shakodna in Shiroro Local Government area of Niger State. Thirty fisher folks were sampled from each of the two villages, giving a total of sixty respondents. Data was collected by the use of structured interview schedules. Findings revealed that respondents (fisher folks) generate reasonable income of between N500 –N1000 per day, they were also well nourished and healthy, aware of the importance of environmental protection, gender sensitive in societal roles, have political
awareness and stability and religious tolerance as a result of engagement in fishing business.
