Documentation on the biographies of two Ikpi-Ẹne (lead Singers) in Igbe
Abstract
Igbe, a traditional religious practice among the Urhobo, has been in vogue for over a century. Deeply rooted in oral tradition, its sacred and social routine is anchored on music and dance. From available literatures in recent times, scholars have laid emphasis on the religious practice undermining the musical aspects which serve as a core element in the religious practice. An effort of this study is for the enhancement, understanding and preservation of the rich musical heritage for the global audience. Literature is “silent” on the documentation of the biographies of the two lead singers (Ikpẹ-ine) in Igbe. Data on these lead singers are preserved in oral records. Not to be distorted or negatively influenced in the future, there is the need for adequate documentation. Data collected was solely from oral interviews on Igbe personnel and family relations. It is revealed that the choice of lead singers (Ikpẹ-ine) and their songs were regulated by the divine inspiration. Revelations from the divine realm are prophesied through songs to concerned members.
