Location Effects On The Growth, Yield And Flavour Expression Of Nsukka Aromatic Yellow Pepper
Abstract
A two-locational trial comprising four varieties of the Nsukka aromatic yellow pepper was carried out in Umudike and Nsukka in 1999. The main objective was to investigate the influence of the environmental differences on growth, yield, aroma and susceptibility of the crop to the pepper leaf curl geminivirus. Except for aroma, significant (P<0.05) differences were observed for all traits among the genotypes in the two locations. There was significant effect of variety on all the characters measured with the exception of crop survivability. The genotype X location interaction affected all the characters except plant height, canopy diameter, fruit number and disease susceptibility. The low growth and yield value in Umudike are reflection of poor adaptation of the Nsukka yellow pepper to the excessive precipitation of the humid forests.
