Abstract

Pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) has shown promise as a source of leaf and seed protein for poultry in Nigeria. But as with most tropical legumes, its seeds contain toxic and growth-inhibitory substances. A 20-week trial was conducted to evaluate the relative effects of raw, boiled and roasted pigeon pea seeds on the performance of laying hens, at dietary levels of 0, 10, 20, 30 and 40%. Boiling reduced slightly opposite effect. As from 20% dietary level, raw pigeon pea significantly (P 0.05) after the performance of the layers although at 40% dietary level, there was consistent slight drop in performance.
