Abstract
The essay deals with the novel by Dolores Prato, Giù la piazza non c’è nessuno, focusing especially on those passages in the book where one can find memories of the representation of “black” or “dark-skinned” people. The influences and stereotypes derived from popular culture in the early 20th Century and the mechanism of projection linked to self-representation converge to give a modern shape to those pages.
