Open archives and collaboration: where to now?

Abstract

Digital technology by facilitating collaboration presents an opportunity for the second-generation digital archive to leverage the network effect and become an open archive. This can be achieved through careful consideration in the design of the archive's software architecture. In this design process, lessons can be taken from both Internet protocols and successful websites who use FLOSS principles and applications. Critical to the success of the open archive will be its flexibility and modularity.
