The need for establishing formal library and information co-operation between the countries of the reconstituted East African Community

Alli AS Mcharazo

Abstract

This article discusses the significance of libraries and information for the reconstituted East African Community (EAC), and gives an account of meetings between Tanzanian, Kenyan, and Ugandan librarians concerning the issue, and of the role the library associations have played in ensuring that it receives greater attention. It argues that libraries and information have largely been taken for granted up to now. There is no clear mechanism for foreseeing the effective storage, utilization and dissemination of information amongst EAC partner countries. Moreover, the absence of a participatory organ to deal with library and information matters is a clear indication of marginalisation. The paper discusses the rationale for library and information co-operation and suggests possible ways forward.
