National library associations in French-speaking Africa: challenges and concerns
Abstract
This paper provides an overview of the current situation of library associations in the French-speaking countries of Africa. It asks how these associations articulate their goals and objectives, how they are managed and funded, and what is their real social impact. The main challenges include general lack of appreciation in society of the value of the library and of the library profession; low membership and the consequent absence of income; lack of association premises and limited access to telecommunication facilities; and the difficulty of reaching out beyond the capital city. Possible solutions include training in finance management and advocacy for association officers; more obvious support for an association from the larger libraries in the country; and some international cooperation.
