Given the negative impact on teenage mothers, the people who care for them, and the children they give birth to. This study examined the pattern of relationship between body image, self esteem, socio economic status, peer influence, and teenage pregnancy. This study employed a correlational design, and a multistage sampling procedure was utilized. Adolescents in Ibadan constitutes the population (N = 150; 12.0% below 14 years, 58.7% 14 16 years, while 29.3% were 17 19 years). Participants completed standardized instruments: (Body Image Acceptance Surve y α = 0.85; Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale α = 0.78; Socio economic Status Scale α = 0.79; Peer Influence Scale α = 0.81; and Teenage Pregnancy Scale α = 0.87). The results showed that body image (r = 0.327; p<0.05), self esteem (r = 0.376; p<0.05), socio economic status (r = 0.306; p<0.05), and peer influence (r = 0.201, p<0.05) all had a significant relationship with teenage pregnancy. A multiple regression coefficient (R = 0.484) and multiple regression adjusted (R2 = 0.234) were obtained. Also, self esteem recorded the most effective relative contribution to teenage pregnancy, followed by body image, parental socio conomic status, and peer influence, respectively. This emphasizes the necessity of broad and all encompassing strategies to stop teenage pregn ancy because it is unlikely that a single element will be adequate to deal with the problem successfully.
Habeeb Omoponle Adewuyi Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275540 Tue, 06 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Polysaccharide based-mucilage and their adhesion, textile and paper applications https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275541
Mucilage are bio substances derived from plants or microorganisms that have positive effects on health, including boosting the immune system, calming the gastrointestinal tract, and decreasing blood pressure. It is common for teachers to suffer from psychosocial work hazards in Nigeria, yet no research has been conducted to examine how teachers' demographics influence such hazards. Therefore, this study investigated the psychological hazards faced by Home Economics lecturers based on their age and location. The researcher employed an ex post fact design and a quantitative approach to study 62 Home Economics lecturers in southeast Nigerian universities. In the study, researchers devised a 28 item questionnaire to collect data about work deviant behavior. A reliability index of 0.76 was estimated for the items of the questionnaire. The data were analyzed using analysis of variance. The findings revealed a high prevalence of Psychological job hazards among Home Economics lecturers in Southeast Universities. Psychological job hazards of Home Economics lecturers were not significantly influenced by their age or loc ation. This implies that psychosocial job risks are not greatly influenced by the age and location of Home Economics lecturers. In conclusion, it was recommended that secondary school authorities consider teacher age and location when assessing psychosocia l work hazards.
Christian Sunday Ugwuanyi Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275542 Tue, 06 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Mental health literacy among first-generation university students with visual impairments https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275543
The major objective of this study was to investigate whether visual impairments (VI) impact mental health literacy among first generation university students (FGUS). A descriptive survey research method was used to examine the mental health literacy of 132 purposive sample of FGUS with and without VI from three federal universities in Southern Nigeria. A 35 item MHL Scale (MHLS) for university students (Crobach’s α 0 .83) with 5 point response was used for data collection. Questionnaire distribution was achieved through the help of two research assistants. Means, standard deviations, analysis of variance and regression plot were employed to analyze the research data. Participants’ mean age was 24.96±3.86 years. Results showed a hi gher level of mental health literacy across seven domains of the MHL Scale among students with VI compared to those without this disability. The students identified mental health literacy they possess including the ability to recognize specific disorders, the ability to seek mental health information, the ability to identify risk factors and causes, the ability to understand self treatment options, the ability to access professional assistance, and positive behaviors that promote awa reness and help seeking. VI did not significantly impact the mental health literacy of FGUS with VI. VI explained only 6.31% of the variation in MHL among FGUS with VI. Accordingly, mental health literacy is an essential skill that should be acquired by everyone, including those who suffer from specific disorders and professionals who care for them. Further effort is required in order to improve the mental literacy of FGUS without VI in Nigerian universities.
Vera Victor Aigbodion Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275543 Tue, 06 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Review Report - Corrosion of household utensils: causes, effects and remedies https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275544
This article was motivated by the avalanche of finance spent annually on addressing the harm caused by corrosion on household wares and buildings , industrial machines and facilities, hospital equipment and many other establishment of man in the universe . Corrosion is a universal phenomenon referred to as the deterioration of metallic material . Metal alloys like stainless steel and aluminium are extensively used in household utensils for their durability, affordability and corrosion resistance. How ever, these materials can leach heavy metals such as chromium, nickel, iron, and aluminium into food, posing serious health challenges . Stainless steel, despite its corrosion resistance, releases harmful metals when exposed to acidic foods, while aluminium utensils corrode and release harmful elements under certain conditions too . Hence, this article was aimed at examining the historical background of corrosion, the causes of corrosion in household wares and utensils, its impact especially on human health a nd economy , and the potential remedies . The findings indicated that acidicfoods and prolonged storage increase metal leaching. Health concerns included increased risks of anemia, dementia, and osteomalacia due to excessive metal accumulation in the body . Mitigationstrategies included using anodized aluminium, minimizing storage time of acidic foods in metal containers, and increasing public awareness about the potential health risks. Proper maintenance and selection of utensils could significantly reduce the hazards associated with metal leaching.
Liberty Kanyamumba, Chika O. Ujah, Daramy V.V. Samples of leaves, roots, and stem barks were prepared by drying them for two hours at 50 0C in a food dehydrator, ground into fine powder and dried again using the air drying process The analyses were carried out using standard methods. The proximate analyses showed that the samples contain crude protein (1.89 2.11%), crude fibre (22.23 22.48%), crude fat (1.99 2.09%), carbohydrates (43. 71 64.96%), ash (4.11 6.64%) and moisture (4.46 4.84%). The phytochemical data showed that all plant components contained phenol, alkaloids, tannins, and terpenoids, but not steroids. Both saponin and flavoloid were found in the plant's roots and leaves only. Flavonoid was not detected in the stem. The results of mineral compositions showed that the root, stem, and leaf amples included potassium (340.83 439.33 mg/100g) calcium (132.99 295.78 mg/100g), iron (1.12 4.21 mg/100g), magnesium (27.41- 39.67mg /100g) and manganese (0.14 3.99 mg/100g). Because of its nutrient contents and phytochemical proportions, consumers are encouraged to use any parts, though root parts of the plant seem to contain high nutrient.
Ndidiamaka Agbo, Chuma Eze Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275558 Tue, 06 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Consumption pattern of wild edible green leafy vegetables found in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275597
This study investigated the consumption pattern of wild edible green leafy vegetables found in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State using a descriptive survey research design. The sample size for this study was two hundred and eleven (211) respondents. A four likert scale structured questionnaire containing twenty four (24) items was used for data collection. Data were analysed using mean scores and standard deviation. The findings of the study revealed that ”Yarin,” “Worowo,” “Gbure,” and “Ebolo" are major wild edible green leafy vegetables found in the study area, and their consumption is quite low. The finding showed that wild edible green leafy vegetables have benefits such as alleviating malnutrition at no cost and can be a good source of income. The findings also showed that urbanisation's preference for cultivated vegetables over wild edible green leafy vegetables, as well as uncultured ideas like ignorance and poverty and well researched information about cultivated leafy vegetables, are among the factors influencing the intake of wild edible green leafy vegetables. The findings of this study asserted that wild edible green leafy vegetables, when compared with cultivated ones, can alleviate malnutrition, prevent micronutrient deficiency, and equally serve as a source of income at little or no cost. Therefore, it was recommended that there is a need to explore, analy se, and document that wild green edible leafy
vegetables are nutritious, health promoting, and easy to cultivate, and bring out substantial yields even under difficult climatic and edaphic conditions.
Monsurat Bello, Abiodun C. Using a scoping review, the institutional support services needed by visually impaired students were examined in this paper. It looked at different strategies for putting these students' institutional support into practice and collated such strategies into levels that can inform inclusive practices in higher institutions of learning. The study followed a PRISMA p rotocol to present a descriptive analysis of peer reviewed publications gathered from PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholars, and PsychInfo . Eight peer reviewed papers with a sample of 316 (303 post secondary school students with VI and 13 teachers) were drawn for the study after eligibility assessment . It was found that post second ary school students with VI still requires a number of institutional support modalities for their smooth career transition. Institutiona l support needs were described under the career challenges experienced by students with visual impairments and the needs for institutional support for building on smooth transition from school to career. It was deduced that student with VI still experiences barriers such as inadequately trained teachers, ill equipped schools to address their needs, financial challenges, public stigma, accessibility, peer to peer acceptance and difficulties in learning at the university. The support needed from the institution were found to be those associated with academic support, integration into the social environment need for institutional structural support services, and career transition intervention support . Practical implications demonstrates that educational institutions play a big part in helping visually impaired students in career transition . These implications can be built into a framework of action for institutional support for students with VI in schools as proposed in this paper.
Charity N. Despite the negative impact of a lack of volitional drive on students' practical skills learning, there is scarcity of literature on amotivation among VTE undergraduate students. This study aimed to demonstrate the effectiveness of problem-based learning (PBL) in transitioning undergraduate students from a state of being a motivated to motivated. The study utilized a quasi-experimental research design and selected 168students in their penultimate and final years majoring in agricultural education, business education, computer education, home economics, and industrial technical education who met the study's inclusion criteria. The intervention consisted of eight weeks of treatment and four weeks of follow-up meetings. An existing academic motivation scale was adapted for use, and data was collected through a self-report questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using independent sample t-tests, and paired sample t-tests. The findings revealed that the level of amotivation among the students was high, and PBL had a significant impact on transitioning VTE students from being a motivated to motivated in the treatment group compared to those in the control group. Furthermore, the positive gains were maintained by the treatment group at follow-up. The study suggests that a PBL program can effectively address students' lack of volitional drive to engage in academic activities among undergraduate students majoring in agricultural education, business education, computer education, home economics, and industrial technical in Nigeria.
Chibueze Tobias Orji, Juliet Perumal, Emmanuel Ojo Copyright (c) 2024 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275723 Tue, 06 Aug 2024 00:00:00 +0000 Undergraduates’ satisfaction of online food and beverage services amidst financial distress in Nnewi Urban, Anambra State, Nigeria https://www.ajol.info/index.php/ijhehar/article/view/275632
This study determined undergraduates’ satisfaction of online food and beverage services amidst financial distress in Nnewi urban, Anambra State, Nigeria.
