English Title: Effect of African weaver ants [Oecophylla longinoda latreille (Hymenoptera: formicidae)] density in mango trees on sugar and organic acids content of mango [Mangifera indica L. (Sapindales: Anacardiaceae)]
English Abstract
Many stakeholders think that weaver ants (O. longinoda), used in biological control of fruits pest, improve the quality of fruits. Previous studies reported that quality improvement may be related to the intensity of ants’ activity. The present study aimed at highlighting the effects of O. longinoda on mango physico-chemical quality according to different ant density of mango tree. An experimental design with (04) treatments corresponding to 04 different levels of ants density: T0 (ant density 0% representing control group), T1 (ants density 0 - 50%), T2 (ants density 50 - 75%) and T3 (ants density > 75%) was carried out on "Gouverneur" variety in a mango orchard at Korobourou, Parakou district in Central-Benin. In plots with ants (T1, T2 and T3), two groups of mangoes fruits (mangoes without scale insects and mangoes with scale insects) were considered. The physico-chemical parameters of different mangoes were accessed by standard methods during two consecutive seasons. The study revealed that there is no difference at the threshold of 5% concerning the physico-chemical quality of different mangoes studied. For the different treatments and the two season, glucose content varies from 1.04 to 3.29% ; fructose content, from 3.61 to 6.98% and sucrose content from 13.90 to 28.18%. Oxalic acid’s content raises from 0.15 to 1.90% while citric acid content ranges from 17.95 to 28.59%. Trittable acidity varies from 2.16 to 4.94% with a total soluble sugar content fluctuating between 17.60 and 19.79%. So, weaver ants do not affect mango physico-chemical quality. This result may favor their use as biological control agent.
