Road safety initiatives and national development: An entrepreneurial perspectives
Abstract
Road safety according to Robert (2003) refers to the method and measures used to prevent users of the road from being killed or seriously injured. The fundamental objective of road safety is to eliminate road traffic crashes and its associated outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) 2018 reports revealed that Annual Road Traffic deaths has reached an alarming rate of 1.35m. These facts can be reiterated in that virtually all the economic policies centres around the use of roads as its constitute 90% of the transportation mode in any country. Road transportation has become such a dominant mode of conveying people, goods and services in Nigeria with patronage cutting across individual communities, private, corporate and government organizations. It also serves as the service link for other mode in the transport chain. The conceptual review, theoretical framework, empirical review and the methodology was equally conceptualized. Result obtained was analysis with the view to coming up with initiatives that can be deployed to addressing the identified problems on the road that will enhance national development. Recommendations in the likes of the concurrent provision of traffic matters in the country, obeying traffic rules and regulations, arming the operatives for effective and efficient operational activities that will enhance the services of the corps in providing meaningful outcome/output towards the development of the nation from the entrepreneurial perspectives were highlighted.
