Impacts of domestic violence on delinquent behaviors amongst Senior Secondary School Students in Ado Ekiti
Abstract
Domestic violence is threatening many Nigerian families and is unfortunately increasing in our society. In Ado Ekiti, students who are products of domestic violence are predominantly subjected to delinquent behaviours. However, how children who experience domestic violence perform academically is still under researched. This study therefore investigated the impact of domestic violence on delinquent behavior amongst Senior Secondary School students in some selected Schools in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria. Data were sourced using primary and secondary data collection. The secondary source included published textbooks, journals and online materials while the primary source included the use of selfstructured questionnaire administered randomly in which all the selected 83 questionnaires out of a hundred (100) questionnaires that were distributed was retrieved. Data retrieved were analyzed through the use of descriptive method such as table and frequency distributions and content analysis. Findings revealed that domestic violence has terrible consequences on children’s performance academically. It also affects them psychologically, emotionally, socially and physically. It has resulted into social imbalance and mental illness of students in secondary schools which are of growing concerns for governmental institutions and schools. Domestic violence has a relationship with child delinquency and this has terrible impact on child academic performance and school attendance and participation. Children should be encouraged to report domestic violence occurring in their environment.
