Publicis ignoramus and weak reactance: An invitationto human rights violation in africa: an extrapolatorypostulation
Abstract
Human rights violation in Africa is pervasive despite both national and international laws that proscribe it. The precursors are a myriad but for the purpose of this study, public ignorance and weak reactance was focused on. Many people in Africa are not aware of their rights or of the laws protecting these rights. This makes them easy prey to instruments of government like the police and the armed forces. People who know about these rights are weak in reacting to violations which creates a vicious cycle of continuous violations. Advocacy groups, civil rights movement and few enlightened entities seem to lack the political will to orientate the public regarding their rights but waste time raising a hullabaloo regarding isolated cases of human rights violations. This gory picture of “ignoramus expenditus” and “impotent performus” gives the governments of African states the motivation to violate the rights of their people. In light of this there is the urgent need for the African Union, governments, NGOs, civil rights groups, African academics and intellectuals and advocacy groups to enlighten the peoples of Africa about their rights, the legal foundation of these rights and the activities to engage in when their rights are violated.
