Online or web-counselling in Nigeria: current status, relevance, problems and implications

Abstract

Online counselling or e-counselling is increasingly becoming an acceptable phenomenon in the world. The aim of this paper was to analyse its presence in Nigeria. As such, the highlight was based on its current status, relevance, problems, and implications with reference to the Nigerian context. It was contended that despite the fact that online counselling has not fully been embraced as a formal enterprise in Nigeria, Nigerians are not unaware of the possible benefits accruable from utilizing online counselling. However, some issues bordering on cost of data, electricity and internet availability among other things are problems that would need attention. Some recommendations toward making an online counselling to be realized in Nigeria are also stated.
