The prognosis of psychiatric disorders and the imperative of eclectic approach to treatment

Celestine O. Mume

Abstract

This paper states that generally psychiatric disorders contribute significantly to disease burden worldwide and that the prognosis of many of these disorders is poor. It emphasizes that there is no system of therapeutics that treats all conditions; the orthodox psychiatric system being no exception. That being the case the paper encourages scientists from different cultural backgrounds to examine their indigenous systems of therapeutics and identify methods that may complement the current orthodox system in order to improve the outcome of psychiatric disorders. With this, patients will be able to enjoy a dignified existence as they will live normal and independent life.

Keywords: Treatment methods; eclectic approach; poor prognosis; high disease burden; psychiatry.
