Library Building as a Contributory Factor to Users’ Deviant Behaviours: A Case Study of University of Abuja Library
Abstract
The study investigated library building as a contributory factor to users’ deviant behaviours. A total number of four thousand library users were selected as sample using stratified sampling technique. Questionnaire were distributed to the sampled population and only three thousand eight hundred and twenty-six questionnaire duly responded to were used in the analysis. The data was treated using frequency counts and percentages. The results revealed that library size affects materials consulted, sitting arrangement and lack of staff supervision which are the major causes of noise. Similarly, the study revealed that lack of surveillance, number of books available, cost of books, lack of photocopying services and users’ attitude are the causes of books theft. However, book mutilation is caused by high demand of books, lack of photocopying services, absence of borrowing opportunities, lack of vigilance and users’ attitude. Further more, forgetfulness, time allowed for borrowing is not enough and non enforcement of penalty on defaulters are the causes of over-due books. The study recommended that library buildings should be large, stocked with enough materials in all formats and made convenient for all library users; this will prevent users’ deviant behaviours.
