The GSM, Internet, Library and Information Service in Nigerian Public Libraries
Abstract
This is a discourse on the adaptation and use of the GSM via the Internet in the provision of both on-- and off-line library and information service to subscribers. It gives a brief history of the GSM and how it came to be popularized in Nigeria, though expensive. The features and components of the GSM phone are also highlighted by the paper as facilitators to its use for on-line home service. The fundamentals of the GSM-Internet connectivity embedded in WAP is given great prominence by the paper. This includes the meaning and uses of WAP for on-line library and information service. Also the various services that the library could provide to WAP-aided subscribers are detailed. The study finally highlighted the problems associated with the provision ICT services. The paper concludes by urging libraries in this part of the world to be dynamic and pro-active in adapting to ICT age in providing fee-based services.
