Information communication technology use as a determinant of librarians’ job performance in public universities in southern Nigeria
Abstract
This study investigated information communication technology use as a determinant of librarians’ job performance in public universities in Southern Nigeria. The survey research design was adopted for this study. The librarians working in the forty-two (42) public university libraries (17 federal and 25 state) situated in the Southern Nigeria,formed the population of the study using total enumeration sampling technique. A total of 571 questionnaires were distributed across the universities with a retrieval success of 464 copies, representing 81.3% return rate. Data were analysed using percentages and multiple linear regression analysis. The findings of this study revealed that the level of job performance of librarians in public universities in Southern Nigeria was high (mean=84.49). Findings revealed that the librarians in Southern Nigerian University libraries agreed to ICT use (x̄ = 3.27). Findings also revealed that the most prevalent ICT tools among the librarians were computers (x̄ = 3.56) and photocopiers/printers (x̄ = 3.53) respectively. Findings revealed that searching for information on the internet was the highest rated purpose of ICT use (x̄ = 3.54). Also, findings revealed that the computer was the most used ICT tool (x̄ = 3.91). Findings further revealed that ICT use has a significant influence on job performance of librarians in public universities in Southern Nigeria (R2 = 0.247, β = 0.497, t (462) = 12.102, p < 0.05). It was recommended that since the findings revealed that the level of job performance of librarians in public universities in Southern Nigeria was high, hence this should be sustained to sustain the job performance of the library personnel.
