Leadership style mostly adopted by Academic Libraries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria
Abstract
The study focused on leadership style and Subordinates’ Job Performance in Academic Libraries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The purpose that guided the study was to find out the leadership style mostly adopted in academic libraries under study. The research design adopted for the study was a survey design while the 74 professional and para-professional staff working in the libraries studied were the respondents. Data collection was through questionnaire instrument titled Leadership Style Mostly Adopted in Academic Libraries (LSMAAL). Research question was answered using frequency and percentages. Null hypothesis was tested using Chi-Square statistics.
Findings of the study revealed that democratic leadership style is mostly adopted in academic libraries studied and this style of leadership results in high employees’ productivity. The null hypothesis that leadership style of academic libraries does not significantly affect subordinate job performance was rejected. Some of the recommendations made by the researchers were that leaders should be encouraged to adopt democratic leadership style since it yields highest result in job performance of subordinates in the academic libraries. Leaders should try as much as possible to maintain cordial relationships with their subordinates. This type of management style in the
academic will create a favourable work environment that will serve as a platform for library staff to put in their best and be resourceful.
