Strategies for improving library user education programme in universities in Benue state
Abstract
This study determines strategies for improving library user education in universities in Benue State. The main purpose of this study is to determine the strategies for students’ positive attitudes towards library user education. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Population of the study was 6,253 and sample size was 625 students selected using disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies, percentages and mean. The study identified temperament of personnel and the importance of orientation courses as major factors affecting students’ positive attitudes towards library user education in universities. Based on this, the study suggested that library orientation be conducted after fresh students has concluded registration routine, inclusion of practical sessions and information technology to structure of user education, increase duration of library orientation and content of GST 114. The study, recommends among others that University libraries should ensure that students are well guided in the library through use of colourful signs and guides. As there is need for hospitality and friendly atmosphere could motivate students to use the library.
