Working Environment as a Motivator for Librarians’ Job Performance in Public Libraries in South-East Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined working environment as a motivator for librarians’ job performance in public libraries in south-east geographical zone of Nigeria. All the libraries in the five public library boards in the South East state formed the population of the study. Description survey design was adopted in the study. With regard to data collection, structured questionnaire and interviews were used as instruments for the study. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics via mean frequencies, standard deviation and percentages. In the course of carrying out the study, two research questions were formulated to serve as a guide for the study. The emerged findings suggest that librarians motivation and productivity in the public libraries in the South East geographical zone of Nigeria was low. It was however recommended that the governments or the states where these libraries are localized should increase the yearly budgetary allocations of these libraries by at least 200%.
