Alliance, Diplomacy and Subjugation: Germano-Bali Relations in the Widikum Area 1890-1914

Abstract

This paper posits that the union between the Germans and the Bali-Nyonga could be described as a marriage of convenience because the two partners got into the union with the aim of using each other to further their ambitions. Relations between indigenous ethnic groups and the colonialists were created strictly on the basis of protection and interest. This alliance tilted the balance in favour of Bali-Nyonga and sharply influenced the socio-economic as well as the political map of the area for over three decades. The paper analyzes the details of the alliance.
