Linguistic Convergence in Diversity: Nigerian English as a Developmental Tool
Abstract
In this paper, we discuss the roles that the English Language has played and is still playing in Nigeria, vis-à-vis the roles played by indigenous languages. We also point out the fact that there is a unique variety of English – Nigerian English, which is used by Nigerians and which binds them together. We suggest that it is this variety of English that should be encouraged by language policy, to be used in most domains of our lives as Nigerians; alongside our native tongues which themselves must be assigned specific roles in the language repertoire of individual Nigerian.
