Abstract

This study was conducted in a hospital with the aim of examining and addressing leadership challenges facing female leaders within the healthcare sector. The study employed qualitative research methods which included semi-structured, face-to-face interviews with 14 participants in leadership positions, as well as with support staff. Purposive sampling was employed and thematic analysis was used to analyse the data gathered during the interviews. Findings revealed that negative stereotypes, lack of trust and gender discrimination are challenges facing female leaders in hospitals. Female leaders also experienced a lack of trust from some female colleagues and felt they had to work hard to prove themselves and be trusted by their fellow colleagues and the community in general. Hospitals and the Department of Health should focus on leadership development and provide support for female leaders within hospitals.
