Community perceptions of normative factors influencing adolescent sexual health in Mutale Municipality of Limpopo Province

Abstract

Adolescence is a complex stage where adolescents experience various developmental challenges. Adolescent sexual health is important in becoming mature responsible adults. The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of the community regarding normative factors influencing adolescent sexual health in Limpopo Province. The design followed a qualitative approach to explore and describe the perspectives of the community. The population were adults residing in Tshiungani village and a non-probability convenience sampling was used. The unstructured interview was used to collect data which was audio-taped and thematic analysis was used during data analysis. Ethical principles and rigour in research were applied. Results indicated depreciation of sexual norms, abuse of reproductive rights and the adoption of new values and norms. Families have dissociated from cultural traditions and are adopting western traditions.Sexual health education is a necessity in order to improve the sexual health of adolescents. Families and communities should revive sexual norms and values in a way that adolescent will embrace this stage through frank open discussions.
