Influence of personality type on marital and sexual satisfaction among married couples in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State, Nigeria

Abstract

This study examined the influence of coupes personality types on sexual and marital satisfaction among married coupes in Makurdi metropolis. The objective of the study among others was to gain an understanding of marital and sexual satisfaction as well as personality type as predictor of marital and sexual satisfaction. A total of 199 married couples within the age range of 23 – 52 years with 102 (51 .3%) males and 96 (48.2%) females. Three instruments were used; marital satisfaction scale (MSS), sexual satisfaction scale (SSC) and big five personality scale (BFPS) questionnaire were used to collect data by using probability random sampling techniques. The collected were tested using simple linear regression. Independent t-test and dependent t – test. Hypotheses were formulated to test and answer the research questions. Results of the study showed that, there was a significant influence of personality types on marital satisfaction. Furthermore, there was a significant joint influence of personality type and sexual satisfaction, for which hypothesis two was also confirmed. Result further revealed that, there was no significant sex difference on personality type and marital satisfaction among married couples in Makurdi metropolis. it was concluded from this study that, personality types have a significant relationship with sexual and marital satisfaction and that sex difference has no significant influence on personality types and marital satisfaction among married couples in Makurdi metropolis. The study recommended among others, that family therapist and counsellors should always conduct personality assessment when handing marital cases among married couples to determine how it may influences their sexual and marital satisfaction.
