Including the excluded: the experience of adult literacy programme in Nigeria
Abstract
This article explores current status of education opportunities available to an excluded group in Nigeria known as People living with Disability (PLWD). This category of people are part of the population of a given society. People living with disability constitute some percentage of the economy. According to the world report on disability published that 25 million Nigerians had at least one disability and in the last Population and housing census estimated 2.32 percent of Nigerians’ estimated 3, 253, 169 people with disabilities. However, despite the percentage of these category of people, PLWD are highly excluded in terms of Adult Literacy Programme. This paper seeks to examines the attention been given to adults living with disabilities, adopting a systematic review of the programmes that have been implemented in Nigeria. Social Inclusion Theory is used for this study. Also, highlights the challenges facing the programmes and suggests remedies for this said group.
