Adebayo Anthony Abayomi

Abstract

The importance of girl-child education to nation-building cannot be over emphasized. However, Northern Nigeria’s high gender inequity in education puts majority of young girls at a severe disadvantage. Prior to Boko Haram insurgency in North-Eastern Nigeria, statistics show that there was abysmal low rate of girls enrolment in schools. The paper examined the effects of Boko Haram activities on girl-child education in North-Eastern Nigeria. The study revealed that the series of abduction of girls from their schools by the dreaded Boko Haram sect has further put the girls at a disadvantage educationally as parents out of fear have increasingly kept their daughters away from school. The study recommended that adequate security should be provided for schools in the area, as well as a concerted effort to rid the nation of the dangerous sect.
