Democracy and Development

Abstract

The paper reviews the political debate by African scholars in the early 80s and 90s on the concept of democracy and its role in development. It acknowledges that though economic growth may engender problems in the short run, in the long run democracy stands a better chance of addressing these than non-democracy. To complete the process of development and democracy, therefore, African governments should periodically submit to a peer review process to be able to discern better how growth translates into development and what challenges and opportunities arise out of certain demands
for reforms.
