Abstract

A retrospective study of all patients operated as day case at the Ebonyi State
University Teaching Hospital over a period of 24 months, 1st January 2004 – 31st
December 2005, was undertaken. One hundred and thirty – three cases were analysed. Seven-seven were males (57.8%) and 56 females (42.1%) with a male: female ratio of 1.3:1. the age range of the patients was 6 months to 75 years with a mean age of 15 years. Excisional biopsy was the commonest procedure performed and the commonest immediate postoperative problem was pain, pentazocine and paracetamol. Mortality rate was zero and very minimal post operative complications recorded. No patient came for readmission after the procedures. Day case surgery in well selected patients appears safe in our environment.
