Abstract
Background: Homa Bay County has the highest National HIV prevalence of 15.3 % and a viral suppression of 80% among Adolescents according to National estimates for 2022. Group therapies and interpersonal psychotherapy have been documented to help address mental challenges affecting adherence. Nyagoro has 86 adolescents on ART. Viral suppression and retention were at 76% and 80% respectively in 2021. We implemented group and interpersonal psychotherapies to address adherence issues, viral suppression and retention
Methodology: We identified root causes of poor adherence as schooling schedule, violence, miscommunication, stigma, treatment illiteracy and non-disclosure. The clinic initiated 9 groups of 10 adolescents having weekly 30 minutes session. The group’s sessions involve sharing of experiences and concerns and coming up with solutions to support clients. A treatment buddy system was also adopted and individual counseling for more personal issues.
Results: A total of 9 groups were formed. Each group had 1 Mentor and 10 adolescents. The viral suppression post group therapies was at 96% by Jan 2024 from the previous 76% in 2021 while retention was at 93% from 80% in 2021.
Conclusion: Mentor-led groups are sustainable and effective in addressing adherence challenges among adolescents and young people.
